Hank Smith shares personal experience disrupting cycles of generational trauma and abuse

“I come out of this with a sense of humor, and also some toxic skills. If there’s anybody out there who kind of identifies here, these skills served you when you were young. So we don’t want to shame those. Like, why am I this way? Why do I respond this way? Through the therapy I’ve been through, I would say you have to thank that part of you. For enabling you to survive. Because without my anger, I wouldn’t have survived without the ability to fight. I think self-compassion is usually the answer for sustaining long-term change where you say, ‘You know what, thank you for that.’”

Your experience matters—whether it’s still unfolding or long behind you. The Come Back Podcast exists because real people are willing to share real journeys. If you’ve stepped away from faith, wrestled with doubt, or found your way back in a way that doesn’t fit a simple narrative, we’d love to hear from you.
